About Los Padrinos

The History Behind Los Padrinos

For decades, El Zonte wasn’t a destination. It was a quiet fishing and farming village on El Salvador’s Pacific coast where life revolved around the ocean, the tides, and the seasons. Dirt roads, a small community, and uncrowded waves defined the town long before international visitors arrived.

Word spread slowly. Not through advertising, but through surfers.

El Zonte became known for its long right-hand point break, consistent swell, and relaxed atmosphere. Unlike busier surf towns, it remained understated – a place where people came for the waves and stayed because of the community.

The surf shaped the culture long before it shaped the economy.

As more travelers discovered El Zonte, cafés, surf schools, restaurants, and small boutique stays began to appear and the town grew carefully.

Even as tourism increased, El Zonte held onto much of what made it different: unpaved streets, local families, and a pace of life that still followed the ocean more than the clock.

Then came a chapter no one expected. In 2019, a local community initiative funded by an anonymous Bitcoin donor began experimenting with using cryptocurrency for everyday transactions. The project became known as Bitcoin Beach and eventually inspired El Salvador’s nationwide adoption of Bitcoin in 2021.

Whether visitors come because they’re curious about Bitcoin or not, that chapter put El Zonte on the world map.

Today, El Zonte is changing again.. International surf competitions. Boutique hotels. Remote workers. Families. Investors. New restaurants.

Yet somehow, if you wake up early enough, it still feels like the fishing village it once was.

The best mornings still begin the same way – with coffee, a walk to the beach, and the sound of waves.

Los Padrinos was created for travelers who want to experience El Zonte the way it has always been meant to be experienced – as part of the neighborhood itself. Just two blocks from the beach and within walking distance of the surf, cafés, and local restaurants, our collection of private homes gives you the space to settle in while staying connected to the rhythm of the town.
